SEO: All Aboard Part 1

February 27th, 2008

It gets interesting, I promise. Search Engine Optimization essentially means maximizing your search engine ranking potential. If I were to search for your website using a search engine, what page would your site appear on? If it’s on the first page, in the top ten, I am very likely to click on it, however, if the website doesn’t show up until page 3, I’m probably not going to look at it, and page 8? Well, your website might as well not exist. So now the question begs, how do I get on page 1?!

The trip to the top is not a tried and true paved path starting at A and ending at B. Instead, the journey is more like a hike through a jagged mountain on an ambiguous path, but the bright side is that there are mile-markers and watering holes along the way. The watering holes are easy to find, just look forward, you’re already there!

The aim of this blog is to welcome any and all fellow journeyers who would like company while trying to navigate the paths of search engine optimization. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m no expert on the subject, being an expert is boring anyhow. I was thinking that we could teach/help each other, if you feel so obliged. If you don’t feel you have much to offer in the way of SEO tips, that is fine too, I don’t mind if you’re just along for the ride.

Our mode of transportation up this mountain (the pinnacle being an awesome page ranking for your website) will be the Search Engine. It is the vessel that will carry us, but it’s gas mileage is a bit outrageous and will need constant refueling. You see, the Search Engine is a finicky lil thing. You may be familiar with some of the various models: google, yahoo, msn,… They are all equally temperamental, but we’ll get to that later.

Now, we know our destination (high page ranking for your website) and we know what we’ll be riding in (a Search Engine), but we don’t know the way. Well, let’s throw caution to the wind and set out on our journey without a map. Okay, don’t get your long underwear in a twist, we DO have a map, but it’s not so much a guarantee of arrival as a guide of how not to fall off the mountain. Hey, it’s as good as it gets.

In the recent past as well as in the days to follow, I have been and will be researching Search Engine Optimization. It can be an overwhelming and mixed up business of scattered blog postings, random web articles, dog-eared book chapters… The purpose of this particular blog is CLARITY. I will do the weeding out and sorting in hopes of presenting a relevant and useful explanation of SEO. What I ask of you is that you add your own insights and together we can establish a symbiotic relationship of learning and maybe even get our websites to the top of that mountain!!

Next time, we embark on our journey! (I’m so nervous, I hate packing! I’d much rather un-pack than pack) We’ll begin with a better understanding of our vehicle, the Search Engine. No need to bring your floor creeper, just yourself. See you then.

Oh Yeah, come on! I’m so interested to learn how this works. What’s the point of having a website if it’s not on page 1 right?

Being a non-profit, we depend on private donations to survive. We also have a small budget for advertising, so any tips are appreciated.

Very intriguing! I hope to learn much as I join you on the journey. Here’s to success, see you on top.
